I'm lookin at my ancestor Catarina de Mendoza baptism

and it says her padrino was Thomas de Villalobos who is her grandfather and
I was wondering if most padrinos are grandparents and relatives or can they
be anyone

Danny, most padrinos were not the grandparents, but quite often they were.
That practice still exists today, especially if it's the first child of the
couple. It's considered very respectful and honors the grandparents.

Hello Danny,
When I began my genealogical research I made the mistake of not paying as much
attention to the padrinos as I should have. I have since found that padrinos were often aunts,
uncles, even older siblings! And this information has helped to fill in blanks in my
research. Happy searching!

I agree with Alice. I noticed people with the last name "de la Mora" that came up in index searches but upon reading the record, it was not a match. I noticed that padrino couples matched those in my tree. I thought this may not just be a coincidence. I made a second tree of this unattached family making careful notes about padrinos and I found the connection 2 generations back. Now I always make a note of padrinos and wish that when we help with indexing, this could be included so that it is searchable.
I don't know if you are a beginner, but also record the ranch, any markings in margins and "page __ of __." The last will help if you have to look for the record image again.

Hi Danny,

The padrinos were responsible for the spiritual welfare of the baptized and were meant to be responsible for educating the child in Catholic doctrine, and, I guess technically be responsible for the child, if something were to happen to the parents, therefore, the padrinos were often close relatives or family friends or those with the ability to take care of the child in the event of the parents death.
 
Regarding Thomas de Villalobos, I don't believe that is Catalina de Mendoza's grandfather. Her padrinos are Josepha Lopez de la Cruz and Thomas de Villalobos, I believe those are Catalina's aunt and uncle. Josepha Lopez de la Cruz aka Martin del Campo who was the wife of Thomas de Villalobos, who was the son of the Thomas de Villalobos that was Catalina's grandfather.
