Gustavo Arellano and his extended family celebrate Christmas Eve at his Tia
Maria's house with a feast of epic proportions.

My parents remain the only ones of their respective siblings who have no
grandchildren, so we -- Mom, Dad, me, a brother and two sisters -- spend most of
our Christmas Eves with the family of my Tia Maria.

    Thanks Yolanda,

This brought back many memories of the way it used to be when we were kids and while it never was this large, there was a semblance of these traditions, the rosary, the misa de gallo, as in midnight mass, and what felt like millions of tamales and people be it friends or family, comadres, compadres and tios and tias politicas. This article is correct in that what you exchanged was not gifts but food, drink and friendship.

    Alicia,
    San Jose, Calif
